Waymo Leads Texas Autonomous Vehicle Market With 577 Registered Autonomous Vehicles!

The autonomous vehicle industry has spent years promising a future driven by robotaxis and self-driving systems. While several companies are racing to expand their presence, new public data from Texas is now offering one of the clearest looks yet at which companies are actually leading the market on the ground.

A new tracking website launched by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has revealed that Waymo is currently dominating the state’s autonomous vehicle market. The website, introduced as part of a new Texas law that took effect on May 28, requires autonomous vehicle companies to register their fleets with the DMV and share safety-related information.

According to the tracker, Waymo has registered 577 autonomous vehicles in Texas, placing it far ahead of competitors in the robotaxi space. Avride follows with 317 registered vehicles, while Nuro has 47.

Tesla, despite operating robotaxi services in cities including Austin, Dallas, and Houston, has registered only 42 autonomous vehicles so far. The newly available data highlights the significant gap between Tesla and Waymo in Texas’ commercial autonomous driving market.

The tracker also offers insight into the autonomous trucking industry. Aurora has registered 91 driverless trucks, while Gatik has 64 vehicles in its fleet. Kodiak Robotics and Waabi have registered 33 and 13 self-driving trucks respectively.
 
While fleet registrations do not necessarily reflect how many vehicles are actively operating on roads, the public database provides one of the most transparent views yet into how autonomous vehicle companies are expanding across Texas.

Waymo launched its commercial robotaxi service in Austin in March 2025 and later expanded operations into Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, further strengthening its position in the state’s growing self-driving market.

As Texas opens up more public data around autonomous vehicles, the numbers are offering a clearer picture of where the industry currently stands. For now, Waymo appears to have a strong lead, while competitors continue expanding their self-driving operations across the state.
