The Retro Camera App Hipstamatic Is Back. Should Instagram Be Worried?
Updated on Thu, Mar 23, 2023
Well, we’re not so sure. On 22nd March, the once-rival of Instagram Hipstamatic, announced its return with a revamped design to fix previous issues users have been experiencing with other social media platforms. #FantasticHipstamatic
However, let's not forget that Instagram is still a powerhouse in the social media world. In 2022, marketers reported Instagram as the second most used social media platform. With 79% of respondents saying they used Instagram to promote their business. According to another report from 2022, 49% of consumers and 59% of marketers agreed to use it in the next 12 months; there's no denying the importance of Instagram!
Unfortunately, the craze for Instagram has faded with time – too many ads, an algorithmic feed that can be frustrating to navigate and an overabundance of clout-chasing creators and influencers are to blame. #TheStruggleIsReal
Nevertheless, with the arrival of Hipstamatic, at least iPhone users can have a refreshing new option to experiment with.
Hipstamatic is an app that's all about creating a community focused on sharing, engaging and experimenting with creativity without data collection and tracking that other apps rely on. Hipstamatic co-founder Lucas Buick says, "We don't need to know who you are. We don't need to know where you're from. None of that tracking stuff matters to the core functionality of this product." #PrivacyMatters
One of the best parts about Hipstamatic is its chronological feed, which lets you see all the updates from the people you care about without any algorithmic interference. Say goodbye to the constant barrage of Reels and TikTok clones and hello to the creative side of photography. #HipstamaticLove

Right now, the only limitation is that Hipstamatic is only available for ioS users. Its founder Buick said, “It won't ever come to Android.” Besides, when asked if Hipstamatic would offer ‘video’ Buick replied, “Absolutely not. No. Never.” Hipstamatic isn't planning on a huge marketing push either but they're hoping that word of mouth will help spread the news.
Only time will tell if Hipstamatic would be charismatic enough to replace Instagram. Will you make some extra space on your iPhone for 'Hipstamatic'? Feel free to add your thoughts in the comments below!
