Superhuman Acquires GPTZero, Bringing AI Detection Startup Into Its Growing AI Portfolio!
Updated on Wed, Jun 24, 2026
TL;DR
- GPTZero, the AI detection startup with 19M users, has been acquired by Superhuman.
- GPTZero grew from a Princeton thesis project into a profitable business with $30M ARR.
- The deal brings one of the most widely used AI detection platforms into Superhuman’s growing AI product lineup.
By the time the acquisition came around, GPTZero had already built a sizable business. What started as a student project soon became one of the most recognizable names in AI detection. While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, Tian told Business Insider that GPTZero had grown to more than 19 million registered users and reached $30 million in annual recurring revenue.
GPTZero began as Tian’s senior thesis project at Princeton and quickly gained attention when AI-generated content started flooding classrooms, workplaces, and online platforms. The startup continued to grow rapidly and, in 2024, Tian told TechCrunch that the company was profitable.
The company raised a total of $13.5 million in funding. That included a $3.5 million seed round led by Uncork Capital and a $10 million Series A round in June 2024 led by Footwork co-founder Nikhil Basu Trivedi. Other investors included Reach Capital, Jack Altman’s Alt Capital, and Neo.
The acquisition brings GPTZero under Superhuman, the company formed after Grammarly acquired email provider Superhuman last year and adopted the Superhuman name. The step is notable because Superhuman already offers an AI detection tool.
Topics For More Insights:
GPTZero’s focus has been helping users identify AI-generated content and defend against AI slop, while Grammarly’s detection features have largely helped users, including students, determine whether their writing appears AI-generated and make revisions when needed. Asked why it acquired a company with a similar offering, Superhuman gave a simple answer: “two AI detectors are better than one.”
The acquisition highlights the continued importance of AI detection tools as businesses, educators, and users look for ways to navigate a world increasingly filled with AI-generated content.
Whether the combination of the two platforms leads to more accurate AI detection remains to be seen, but the deal highlights the continued demand for tools that can verify content in the AI era.
