Nothing Chats App Crashes Within 24 Hrs Of Its Launch But Promises A Comeback!

Once upon a time, in a tech saga that seemed too good to be true, the partnership between Nothing and Sunbird promised Android users Apple's coveted iMessage through its Nothing Chats app. As the app hit the market, what unfolded wasn't a breakthrough but a security rumble. Do you remember Nothing Chats app, the software that promised to be the bridge between Apple's iOS-based iMessage and Android messages?

Unfortunately, Nothing Chats app has crashed and burned!

According to the report, promising blue bubbles to Android users, the collaboration between Android manufacturer "Nothing" and the Sunbird app company nosedived within 24 hours of its launch. Soon after the warning and skepticism, Nothing swiftly removed its Nothing Chats app from the Play Store and delayed the launch.


You might be wondering why this happened.

To begin with, the pitch itself was a security nightmare. Offering access to iMessages in exchange for Apple credentials hinted at trouble. 

In terms of the security flaws, investigative reports by 9to5Google and Text.com unearthed several issues - from unencrypted messages stored in plain text to exposed authentication tokens and vulnerable databases. Nothing Chats was allegedly a hacker's paradise!

In fact, according to 9to5Google's Dylan Roussel who investigated the app, found that apart from all the public text data, "All of the documents (images, videos, audios, pdfs, vCards...) sent through Nothing Chat AND Sunbird are public." As per Roussel, was able to access some of the 630,000 media files stored by Sunbird. Roussel said this whole scenario was "probably the biggest 'privacy nightmare' I've seen by a phone manufacturer in years."

Text.com even demonstrated how they could access supposedly secure messages through Sunbird's servers. The fallout didn't stop there; personal info from thousands of users was vulnerable, turning the situation into a privacy nightmare.

As per Text.com's blog, "When a message or an attachment is received by a user, they are unencrypted on the server side until the client sends a request acknowledging and deleting them from the database. This means that an attacker subscribed to the Firebase Realtime DB will always be able to access the messages before or at the moment they are read by the user."

So, what was Nothing and Sunbird's reaction?

Surprisingly, Sunbird remained silent amid the chaos. Their initial responses to security concerns painted a picture of incompetence rather than reassurance. Defending unencrypted HTTP raised eyebrows—after all, modern internet practices outright reject such risky methods.

Nothing allegedly overlooked due diligence and unquestioningly entered a partnership, failing to vet Sunbird's claims or apps. 

However, Nothing has vowed to fix the bugs and relaunch the app. 

In a nutshell, the saga of Nothing Chats serves as a cautionary tale for businesses – it is important to balance out the flashy promises with solid security to succeed.
