Returning to the Moon is no longer just about landing astronauts and planting flags. NASA is now laying the groundwork for something much bigger, a long-term lunar presence supported by rovers, cargo landers, scientific infrastructure, and commercial partnerships.

TL;DR

  • NASA introduced new Moon Base missions, lunar rovers, and cargo landers to support future Artemis astronaut missions.
  • Blue Origin, Astrolab, and Lunar Outpost secured major NASA contracts tied to Moon exploration infrastructure.
  • NASA’s MoonFall mission will send four drones to explore the lunar South Pole ahead of future human landings.

As Artemis missions move closer to reality, NASA shared new details about how it plans to turn the Moon’s South Pole into a working exploration hub. During a Moon Base event at NASA Headquarters in Washington, the agency announced new contracts, upcoming robotic missions, and fresh timelines tied to its lunar exploration roadmap.

“The Moon Base will be America’s and humanity’s first outpost on another celestial world,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. “Every mission, crewed and uncrewed, will be a learning opportunity as we return to the lunar surface, build the infrastructure to stay, and master the skills required to live and operate in one of the most demanding and dangerous environments imaginable. We will go for the science, for all we stand to gain from an economic and technological perspective, for the innovations that will make life better here on Earth, and to prepare for where we will inevitably go next. We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership, the bipartisan commitment from Congress, our industry and international partners, and the dedicated NASA workforce whose expertise enables us to achieve the near-impossible.”

NASA confirmed that its first Moon Base mission is targeted for launch no earlier than fall 2026 aboard Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mark 1 Endurance lander. The mission will carry scientific instruments aimed at studying how lunar landings affect the Moon’s surface while also helping improve navigation accuracy for future Artemis astronaut missions planned for 2028.

Two additional Moon Base missions are also lined up for this year. Moon Base II will use Astrobotic’s Griffin lander to transport cargo and mobility systems, including Astrolab’s FLIP rover. Meanwhile, Moon Base III will carry NASA’s Lunar Vertex investigation aboard Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C Trinity lander to study unusual lunar swirls and better understand the Moon’s surface conditions.

NASA also awarded rover development contracts worth $219 million to Astrolab and $220 million to Lunar Outpost. The companies will develop lunar terrain vehicles capable of supporting astronauts, cargo movement, autonomous operations, and scientific exploration on the Moon’s surface ahead of future crewed Artemis missions.

To support lunar transportation efforts, NASA awarded Blue Origin another $188 million contract, with options extending the total value to $280.4 million, for delivering rovers and infrastructure to the lunar South Pole region.

The agency also shared an update on MoonFall, a planned 2028 mission led by Jet Propulsion Laboratory with Firefly Aerospace. The mission will send four drones to explore difficult lunar terrain and gather imagery near future Artemis landing zones. NASA said more Moon Base missions and commercial task awards will be announced in the coming weeks as it continues building toward sustained lunar operations and future human missions to Mars.
