Overall Rating

Meta is preparing to upgrade Edits with an AI assistant, a desktop version, expanded insights, and creator testing tools, giving Instagram creators more ways to plan, edit, analyze, and publish short-form videos without leaving Meta’s ecosystem.

TL;DR

  • Meta previewed an AI assistant and desktop version for Edits.
  • The assistant will use Instagram performance data to suggest ideas.
  • New tools include a Beta tab, deeper audience insights, topic search, and variant testing.
  • Meta says Edits-made content sees higher saves and reshares.

Meta previewed major upcoming additions to Edits, its video-editing app for creators, at an invite-only creator event in Los Angeles. The biggest updates include an AI assistant and a desktop version for what has so far been a mobile-only app.

The AI assistant is designed to help creators understand their Instagram performance and brainstorm content ideas. It will use signals such as views and video-retention insights to explain what is working, why it may be working, and what creators could make next.

The tool is also expected to suggest ideas tied to trending audio, helping creators respond faster to content trends. This makes Edits less of a simple editing app and more of a planning, analytics, and production hub for Instagram creators.

The upcoming desktop version, meanwhile, will give creators a larger workspace and more precise editing control. Meta also says creators will be able to sync workflows between mobile and desktop, bringing Edits closer to CapCut, which already offers desktop editing.

What Else Is Meta Adding To Edits?

Meta is also rolling out a Beta tab that will give creators early access to experimental features. The company plans to use this section to collect feedback on tools that are still in development.

The app is also gaining deeper audience insights, including demographic breakdowns and details on when audiences are most engaged. These build on existing Edits analytics such as watch time, follower gains from specific videos, and where viewers stop watching.

Creators will also be able to search topics inside the Inspiration feed to find reels and templates connected to a trend or idea. Another new feature will let creators create multiple versions of a single video to test what performs best before publishing.

The numbers suggest Meta already sees traction. The company said Edits-created content sees a 10% higher save rate and 2% higher reshare rate compared with content not made on Edits. Meta also said more than half of people watching Reels on Instagram see Edits-created content every day.

The Competitive Angle

Edits first arrived in 2025 as Meta’s direct answer to ByteDance’s CapCut, with tools for video editing, inspiration, project management, recording, and insights. TechCrunch’s earlier guide noted that Edits includes features such as green screen, automatic captions, beat markers, filters, transitions, keyframes, AI restyling, and draft sharing through Instagram DMs.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri previously framed Edits as more than a standard editor, saying, “Edits is more than a video editing app; it’s a full suite of creative tools.” He also said it was Meta’s job to provide creators with “the best possible tools.”

This strategy also mirrors Meta’s broader AI push for creators. Earlier this month, Meta announced a Facebook creator assistant that turns performance insights into actionable ideas and gives personalized recommendations based on content style, performance, community, and creator goals.

That Facebook tool is rolling out in the U.S., Canada, and India, and Meta said it would add more capabilities over time. The Edits assistant appears to extend a similar idea to Instagram creators, where Meta competes heavily with TikTok and YouTube for creator time and loyalty.

Edits is currently free on iOS and Android, and its app listings describe it as a free video editor for creators that can export videos in 4K without a watermark.

For Meta, the update is not just about helping creators edit faster. It is about keeping the entire creator workflow, from idea discovery to analytics to publishing, inside Instagram.
