Google has rolled out a new Disco icon pack for Pixel phones, turning Android home screens into glittery, mirror-ball-inspired layouts. The playful release follows a short online tease from Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat and lands as Google continues expanding AI-backed personalization across Pixel devices.
TL;DR
- Google has launched Disco icons for Pixel phones.
- The icon pack gives supported apps a shiny, disco-ball-style look on a black background.
- The feature appears through Pixel’s AI-generated custom icon system.
- The update follows viral social media interest and Spotify’s recent disco-style app icon experiment.
Google has officially joined the glitter party. The company has rolled out a new Disco custom icon pack for Pixel smartphones, letting users give their home screen a sparkly makeover that makes app icons look like mini mirror balls. The update was confirmed by Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat, who posted on X, “Your wish is our command. Disco icons available on Pixel as of today … Are y’all sure you still want this?”
As per reports, the new icon pack is now rolling out on Google Pixel phones and gives each app icon a disco-ball effect placed over a black background. 9to5Google described the update as “a whole vibe,” while also noting that the feature is part of Google’s broader custom icon system for Pixel devices.
The move didn’t come out of nowhere. Disco-styled icons, also called “discomorphism” by some users online, had gained traction across tech social media after designers and users began sharing shiny mockups of popular app icons.
Android Authority reported that Samat had earlier teased the idea of an official icon pack before Google made it real for Pixel users.
The update also arrives shortly after Spotify temporarily changed its iOS app icon to a glittery disco-ball design to celebrate its 20th anniversary and promote its “Party of the Year(s)” experience. However, Spotify’s experiment drew mixed reactions, with the company later acknowledging that “glitter is not for everyone” and saying the classic icon would return.
For Pixel users, the Disco icon pack is tied to Google’s newer AI-generated icon personalization feature. Google said in its March 2026 Pixel Drop that users could “choose from five AI-generated styles” to give icons across the display a consistent aesthetic.
Android Authority reported that the Disco pack can be accessed through Wallpaper and style, then Icons, Create, and Disco. The publication also noted that the feature requires a Pixel running Android 16 QPR3 and supports Pixel models going back to the Pixel 6 series.
The Disco pack joins other AI-backed Pixel icon styles such as Scribbles, Cookies, Easel, Treasure, and Stardust. 9to5Google noted that these styles were added through the March 2026 Feature Drop and allow users to create consistent app icon aesthetics, though the results may vary depending on the app.
This is not a major platform update, but it says plenty about Google’s current Android direction. With Material 3 Expressive, Google has been leaning into a more personalized, animated, and visually playful Android experience.
Topics for more insights:
The company’s Android design refresh focuses on personalization, smoother animations, and more expressive interactions across Android and Wear OS.
Still, the update may divide users. Some will see the Disco pack as a fun, low-stakes customization option. Others may find it too flashy, especially since every icon uses a dark, glossy, mirror-ball look.
Android Authority’s hands-on noted that some icons translate well to the design, while others can look inconsistent.
Either way, Google appears to be treating home screen personalization as more than just wallpaper matching. With AI-generated icon packs now in the mix, Pixel users are getting a more experimental version of Android customization, one shiny app icon at a time.
