Mirror, mirror on the wall,

Who’s the smartest of them all?

(Why not ask ChatGPT?)

Why not? After all, GPT-4, the latest and greatest language model from OpenAI, has done the unthinkable!

A report from 26th March about Bryan Caplan, a professor at George Mason University has stunned everyone. Professor Caplan gave ChatGPT questions from his fall midterms and ChatGPT-4 surprisingly scored an A grade! (Well, it has stunned everyone!)

In January, Bryan Caplan wrote a blog post, "ChatGPT Takes My Midterm and Gets a D" on Bet On It, in which he mentioned he gave ChatGPT questions from his fall midterms. According to Caplan, his exam questions test students' understanding of economics. It was around the time when the initial version of ChatGPT was launched – it stumbled. The bot scored 31 out of a possible 100 on his test, equal to a D grade, well below his 50% median. "ChatGPT does a fine job of imitating a very weak GMU econ student," Caplan quoted in the same blog post. #NoHardFeelingsOpenAI

On the other hand, according to a latest report, the latest version of ChatGPT, GPT- 4, has stunned even the toughest critics like Caplan. This version scored 73% on the same midterm test, equal to an A and among the best scores in his class. The recent paywalled upgrade of ChatGPT fixed some of the early issues with the beta version, GPT-3.5. It allegedly involves making ChatGPT 40% more likely to reply with accurate responses and equipped for nuanced instructions. Caplan said, "The only thing I can say is it seems much better."

Now that’s quite an improvement!

The same report states while AI (Artificial Intelligence) bots have caused headaches for examiners in the past, with plagiarism being hard to prove without material evidence of wrongdoing, Caplan is still thinking of doing away with graded homework in the wake of ChatGPT's rise.

With the rise of AI bots such as ChatGPT, the future of education and testing is changing rapidly. However, the future of testing still remains to be determined. It's visible that ChatGPT and other large language models will continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in education and beyond.
