Google used I/O 2026 to push YouTube deeper into its AI ecosystem, announcing two major updates focused on how users discover videos and how creators remix Shorts using Gemini-powered tools.

TL;DR

  • YouTube introduced Ask YouTube, a conversational search experience that helps users find videos through more complex prompts and follow-up questions.

  • The platform also added Gemini Omni to YouTube Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create app, making it easier to transform Shorts with AI prompts and images.

  • AI-remixed Shorts will include digital watermarks, identifying metadata, and links back to the original video.

  • Creators can opt out of visual remixing, while YouTube is expanding likeness detection to all creators aged 18 and above.

Ask YouTube Turns Video Discovery Into A Conversational AI Experience

YouTube is rethinking how users search for videos with Ask YouTube, a new conversational search experience powered by Google’s AI push.

Instead of relying only on short keywords or direct video titles, users can ask more detailed and natural questions. For example, YouTube says users could search for tips on teaching a child how to ride a bike or ask for creator reviews of cozy games to play before bedtime.

The feature also supports follow-up questions, which means users can continue refining what they are looking for without starting a new search from scratch. This makes YouTube search feel more like an interactive discovery session than a static results page.

Ask YouTube will compile relevant videos from across YouTube’s catalog, including long-form videos and Shorts, and present them in an interactive, structured response.

That is a meaningful shift for the platform. YouTube already functions as one of the world’s largest search engines for video, but conversational search could change how users discover content across tutorials, reviews, entertainment, education, shopping, and creator-led recommendations.

The feature is currently available for YouTube Premium members aged 18 and older in the U.S. through youtube.com/new. YouTube says it plans to roll it out broadly to all users soon.

For Google, the move also gives Gemini a major consumer surface. Rather than asking users to open a separate AI app, Google is putting conversational discovery directly inside one of its most-used platforms.

Gemini Omni Pushes YouTube Further Into AI-Powered Creation

The second major update focuses on creation. YouTube is adding Gemini Omni to YouTube Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create app, giving users new AI-powered ways to transform Shorts.

With Gemini Omni, users can remix eligible Shorts by adding prompts and images to generate a new version of a video. YouTube says creators can change a scene into a 90s-style look or insert themselves alongside a favorite creator, while maintaining the context of the original video.

That could make AI remixing far more accessible to everyday users. Instead of needing advanced editing skills, creators can use prompts to change a video’s style, structure, or visual direction.

YouTube says Gemini Omni better understands user intent, which should help create more consistent and meaningful storytelling. It also handles more complex video and audio adjustments in the background, allowing creators to focus more on ideas and less on technical execution.

However, YouTube is also trying to address the risks that come with AI-generated media. Shorts remixed through Gemini Omni will include digital watermarks, identifying metadata, and links back to the original video.

Creators will also remain in control of their content and can opt out of visual remixing in Shorts at any time. YouTube’s likeness detection tool, which helps creators detect and manage use of their likeness, is also expanding to all creators aged 18 and older.

That balance is important. AI remixing could become a major creative tool for YouTube, but only if creators feel their work, identity, and attribution are being protected.

Remixing with Gemini Omni is rolling out at no cost in YouTube Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create app. It is also coming soon to AI Playground, giving users another space to experiment with AI-powered creation.

Together, Ask YouTube and Gemini Omni show how Google wants YouTube to evolve on both sides of the platform. Viewers get a more conversational way to find content, while creators get easier tools to remix and build on video trends.
