The Future Of HR: How AI Is Reshaping People, Performance And Work

The role of HR is undergoing one of its biggest transformations in modern business history.

What was once viewed primarily as a function focused on hiring, compliance, employee relations, and administrative operations has now become a critical driver of business strategy. As artificial intelligence continues reshaping industries, HR leaders are finding themselves at the center of workforce transformation.

In this special edition of TechDogs Discover Dialogues Roundtable, we brought together three accomplished HR leaders to discuss how organizations can navigate this rapidly changing landscape:

Nancy Hauge, Chief People Experience Officer at Automation Anywhere

Lisa Sherwell, Chief People Officer at SUSE

Arpit Shelat, Director - Human Resources, Genesys India

Together, they explored one of the biggest challenges organizations face today: balancing employee experience with business performance while preparing for an AI-powered future.

People vs Performance: Are They Really Opposites?

The discussion began with one of the biggest debates in HR today, should organizations prioritize people or performance?

Nancy Hauge challenged the idea that these two goals are in conflict. She explained that organizations often treat people and performance as opposing forces because they still operate with outdated industrial-age thinking.

According to Nancy, the future of work requires organizations to redesign roles so humans can focus on creativity, decision-making, and problem-solving rather than repetitive tasks.

Lisa Sherwell added that organizations need clarity about their values and transparency with employees. If businesses are focused on efficiency, they need to communicate that clearly. If they want to use AI to help employees take on more meaningful work, they need to communicate that just as clearly.

Arpit Shelat emphasized that performance should be achieved through people, not at their expense.

Is AI Making HR More Human?

One of the most interesting moments in the roundtable came when the conversation shifted toward AI.

Instead of discussing AI as a threat, all three leaders argued that AI could actually make HR more human.

By automating repetitive administrative tasks, HR teams can spend more time on coaching, leadership development, employee engagement, and meaningful conversations.

Lisa explained how AI is enabling more personalized learning and coaching experiences.

Nancy discussed how AI can create highly customized employee experiences that younger generations increasingly expect.

Arpit highlighted that while AI can improve efficiency and analytics, empathy, trust, judgment, and human relationships remain irreplaceable.

Building Future-Ready Workforces

Another major discussion focused on talent development.

Organizations often face pressure to fill immediate roles quickly while also preparing employees for future demands.

The panel agreed that relying solely on external hiring is no longer sustainable.

Instead, companies must invest in:

  • Internal mobility

  • Upskilling

  • Leadership development

  • Capability building

  • Workforce planning

Lisa shared how SUSE launched initiatives to help experienced employees rediscover growth opportunities within the organization.

Nancy emphasized that future-ready talent goes beyond AI literacy—it requires stronger critical thinking and decision-making skills.

The Rise Of Hybrid Roles

As AI reduces manual work, job roles are becoming increasingly fluid.

Employees are now expanding beyond traditional job boundaries.

Designers are learning development skills.

HR professionals are becoming app builders.

Cross-functional work is becoming more common.

The panel discussed how organizations must move away from rigid job descriptions and create environments where employees can continuously evolve their skill sets.

Is Work-Life Balance Dead?

The final segment explored one of the most relatable topics in today’s workforce.

Has work-life balance become outdated?

The panelists argued that traditional definitions of work-life balance may no longer reflect modern work realities.

Instead, flexibility, autonomy, personalization, and ownership of time are becoming more important.

Employees increasingly want workplaces that respect their personal lives while giving them opportunities to do meaningful work.

Final Thoughts

The biggest takeaway from this conversation was simple:

HR is no longer a support function.

It is becoming one of the most strategic functions in modern business.

As AI transforms industries, HR leaders will play a crucial role in helping organizations redesign work, unlock human potential, and build the future workforce.

And perhaps most importantly, they’ll help ensure that as technology evolves, work becomes more human, not less.
