Process Water Reuse With Onsite Treatment
Overview
Carlsberg partnered with Grundfos, NIRAS, and Pantarein to create an onsite Total Water Management (TWM) plant at its Fredericia brewery in Denmark — the first of its kind in the food and beverage industry to recycle process water safely.
The plant treats and reuses 90% of the brewery’s process water (about 1,800 m³ per day), helping Carlsberg move toward its 2030 “Together Towards Zero” target of reducing water consumption by 50%.
Using advanced biological treatment, membrane filtration, and reverse osmosis, the system produces high-quality water for cleaning and process use. It also generates biogas, saving nearly 10% in energy consumption.
The project saves 560,000 m³ of water per year and serves as a global model for Carlsberg’s breweries in water-scarce regions such as India and China.
